Flight is booked, hotel for the first few nights in Bangkok booked ($45 a night for a nice 4-star includes breakfast and taxes). Probably going to hit Chiang Mai as a next stop and then one of the islands for some beach hut laziness. Which island should I go to? Suggestions? Kinda picking between Phuket and Koh Chang (thanks Robyn!) but open to others...

I've only been to Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and my wife certainly didn't book us into no $45 deal: she settled us into one that had another zero at the end, and then some.

Go to Phuket...but if you do, get one with a private beach, not like the sleezy stuff downtown (unless you like that). We've been to this hotel the last 2 times (wedding place), and loved its atmosphere (all the staff know your name!):

There are better hotels around, and some may be a better value - but I know from experience that this one is good.
